Improves Air Quality
Living roofs actively work on the air around them. Green roof technology filters carbon and reduces pollutants including nitrous oxide, sulfur dioxide, and ground-level ozone, while also capturing the fine particulate matter that urban environments generate in abundance. In a city or dense suburban setting, a green roof is not an amenity – it is a contribution to the health of everyone nearby.
Provides Needed Habitat and Increases Urban Biodiversity
In the middle of paved infrastructure, green roofs restore something essential: a place for living things to land, rest, feed, and move. They function as ecological connectors – bridges that allow birds, bees, bats, native insects, and pollinators to navigate from one green space to another across an otherwise inhospitable urban landscape. Pollinators are responsible for the survival of the majority of the world's flowering plants and a significant portion of the food we eat. Retains Stormwater
Green roofs absorb and hold a significant portion of annual rainfall – in many cases well over half – before it ever reaches a drainage system. By slowing and reducing stormwater runoff, they ease the burden on combined sewer systems, reduce the risk of overflow, and help keep local waterways cleaner.
